Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT)

The Office of Emergency Services partners with the San Francisco Fire Department to host a Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) certification training at SF State regularly, usually in the spring. The last NERT at SF State was March 10-12, 2026, and it was a HUGE success! 56 people were certified in life-saving disaster response techniques.

NERT is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco. Through this program, individuals will learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention.  The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that will help individuals respond to a personal emergency as well as act as members of a neighborhood response team.

Class schedule
Class 1: Earthquake Awareness, Preparedness, and Hazard Mitigation
Class 2: Basic Disaster Skills
Class 4: Light Search and Rescue
Class 5: Team Organization and Management
Class 6: Skills Development and Application
