MAR 08, 2024 Campus Water Outage

Dear campus community,
Water service has been restored to the main campus. Intermittent issues may persist for some time as pressure returns.
Many courses and in-person activities have moved to remote modalities for the remainder of the day. Students with questions about specific courses or activities should contact professors or offices directly. Employees with questions should contact their supervisor. The J. Paul Leonard Library will remain open for today’s regular hours.

A broken city water main continues to cause a water outage on the main campus. Classes and activities on the main campus should move to remote modalities where possible. Supervisors should transition main campus offices to remote work for the remainder of the day wherever possible. Contact offices before coming to campus.
University Park North, University Park South and Stonestown Mall are not affected.
Res Life will send additional updates directly to residential students. Portable toilets are en route to campus.

January 4, 2024 - Water Outage on Main Campus

Water service has been restored to the main campus. Intermittent issues may persist for some time as pressure returns.
Some in-person office hours may be affected for the remainder of the day. Call or email before visiting offices in person. The Library will be open until 5 p.m. as scheduled.

An outage of the City's water supply is currently impacting most main campus buildings. Facilities has contacted the Public Utilities Commission, but there is currently no timetable for restoration of service. Restroom facilities are not functional at this time.
Supervisors should transition main campus offices to remote work for the remainder of the day wherever possible. Contact offices before coming to campus.
Further updates will be provided by 1 p.m.
October 29, 2023 - Power Outage and Restoration on Main Campus
Mashouf Wellness Center will remain closed for the remainder of the day.
The J. Paul Leonard Library 1st floor lobby, and events rooms and ground floor study commons are open as scheduled.

9/22/2023 - Air Quality in the Bay Area

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is forecasting air quality condition readings that are unhealthy for sensitive groups today – Friday, September 22 – in the city and county of San Francisco and Marin County.
All in-person classes and activities continue as scheduled.
Sensitive groups should consider limiting outdoor activities. Children, older adults and individuals with heart and lung disease are considered especially sensitive and should remain indoors.
For those on campus, a supply of KN95 particulate masks is available for use. Students living on campus who are sensitive to smoke, visit your residence hall’s community desk to pick up a mask. Students may also go to the Cesar Chavez front desk until 10 p.m. Faculty and staff may go to Environmental, Health and Safety located in ADM 260 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily this week to pick up a mask.
What to expect in the coming days: Air quality condition readings are projected to be moderate to good heading into the weekend. If readings reach unhealthy for sensitive groups next week, we’ll send an update to the campus community.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is reporting air quality condition readings in the low unhealthy range for Tuesday evening, September 19 in the city and county of San Francisco and Marin County.
Sensitive groups should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, limit outdoor activities or consider moving them indoors or rescheduling. Children, older adults and individuals with heart and lung disease are considered especially sensitive and should remain indoors. All others should choose less strenuous activity, reduce or postpone outdoor activity.
For those on campus, a supply of KN95 particulate masks is available for use. Students living on campus who are sensitive to smoke, visit your residence hall’s community desk to pick up a mask. Faculty and staff on campus may go to the Cesar Chavez front desk until 10 p.m. tonight or to Environmental, Health and Safety located in ADM 260 to pick up a mask between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily this week.
Should air quality conditions remain unhealthy, as determined by the Air Quality Management District, we will send an update to the campus community by 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20.

The Bay Area Air District has shared that the Bay Area may see some smoke impacts due to fires in Oregon and Northern California. See post here.
San Francisco State's Office of Emergency Services is monitoring. No changes to schedule needed at this time, but you may prefer to close windows and stay indoors due to smoke smell in air. Air Quality remains in Moderate range at this time and can be monitored at this website: AirNow.gov
Guidance in the Moderate range states: Air quality is acceptable. However, there may be a risk for some people, particularly those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. Please see this link for further information: AQI Basics.

9/19/23 Power Outage on Campus

Power has been restored to the main campus. There may be intermittent disruptions as power is being restored and tested in all buildings. In-person afternoon classes and activities may resume as scheduled. Faculty are asked to accommodate students who are transitioning from remote instruction to in-person activities.
Faculty who are opting for remote modalities this afternoon should contact students. Students who are not able to come to in-person classes should contact their instructor.

Power remains out on the main campus. Classes scheduled to begin before 12:00 noon on the main campus should move to remote modalities where possible. Faculty members should contact students to let them know if courses will meet remotely. Staff should remain on site. Contact your appropriate administrator if you are experiencing any challenges.
A further update will be sent at 10:30 a.m.
Res Life will communicate directly with students about dining and other service updates.

A power outage is affecting the main campus. Facilities is working with PGE. More information to follow when power is restored or if further updates are warranted.
3/14/23 Exercise Caution: High Winds and Fallen Trees
With high winds and fallen trees on and around campus, please exercise increased caution while traveling. Specifically:

Be aware of your surroundings. Look up and remain vigilant.

Don’t congregate under trees.

Avoid using headphones or looking down at your phone to remain alert.
Please also avoid any areas on campus closed off with caution tape. That includes the following areas (there could be more later, since the high wind alert is still in effect):

The courtyard behind the Health and Social Sciences (HSS) and Business buildings

Access road / bike path to campus behind Cox Stadium

Main road from Quad down to Cox Stadium running between Gym and Thornton Hall

- High winds are expected throughout today and into tomorrow. Be cautious of falling branches and trees on campus, be safe on the roads, and bundle up!
1/4/2023 Weather Update
- Due to the potential for widespread flooding, mud/landslides, and impassable roads, SF State employees who can work remotely should do so Wednesday and Thursday, January 4-5. If conditions worsen and additional actions are taken by the campus, employees and students will be notified by email and by the campus’s emergency notification system, SF State Alert. Employees can opt-in for SF State Alert by following the steps here (Office of Emergency Services website.)
USGS Aftershock Forecast

- According to USGS forecast, there is a 1% chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5, which can be damaging, within the next week. There will likely be smaller aftershocks within the next week, with up to 6 magnitude 3 or higher aftershocks. Magnitude 3 and higher aftershocks are large enough to be felt nearby.
Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Today Near San Jose, No Impact to Campus
October 25th, 2022 3:15pm
- An earthquake was felt across the Bay Area at 11:42 a.m. this morning, October 25, 2022. Preliminary reports are that it registered 5.1. on the Richter scale and was centered 12 miles south of San Jose.
- At this time, there are no reports of significant impacts on SF State campuses, and there are no anticipated disruptions to University activities, classes or business.
- Please remain vigilant, since aftershocks are always possible. In the event of an aftershock, Duck, Cover and Hold until the shaking stops. Report emergencies by calling 911.
