California Emergency Response Corps (CERC) at SFSU

The CERC mission is to help Californians become better prepared for disasters and to respond to disasters if needed.

The California Emergency Response Corps (CERC) is an AmeriCorps program that is devoted to disaster preparedness and response in the state of California. Members deploy to state-declared emergencies, empower community-based partnerships, and serve at-risk community members through local partner placements. Besides deploying to disasters, CERC members work with regional partners and focus on helping local communities respond to, prepare, and recover from disasters.

Each service site has its own individual structure and policies, but all members:

  • Serve their host site's community daily
  • Attend CERC-wide, regional, and site-specific trainings
  • Are responsible for being available to deploy for up to 2 weeks at a time, anywhere in the state within 24-48 hours

  ***This is a full-time 40 hours/week position***

CERC at SFSU

San Francisco State University's Office of Emergency Services has partnered with CERC since 2023 through an agreement between Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) and the CSU Chancellor's Office. For the 2025-2026 service term, 11 CSU campuses have 14 CERC members as part of their CSU's emergency management team.

Our CERC members are a part of the main OES team and work closely with us to keep our campus community prepared. Members can expect responsibilities such as:

  • Outreach (tabling, social media management, marketing trainings and events, etc.)
  • Event management
  • Emergency Preparedness Newsletter
  • Lead trainings (Stop the Bleed, Pet Preparedness, Go-Bag training, etc.)
  • Collaborate with student organizations
  • Manage emergency supply inventory
  • Support the campus during emergency operations center (EOC) activations
  • Website management
  • Work with staff on developing emergency policy and procedures

This is a paid fellowship offering valuable real-world experience and mentorship in the field of emergency management. Even without a background in emergency management, we encourage those who are passionate about community, safety, resilience, and support to apply.
